Junior/Senior Classical Day Program
Overview
History-Ancient Greece, Rome, the New Testament and Early Church
In this course we will move beyond the facts of the people and events
and dig into the principles and underlying foundations of our nation.
Based on the premise that these students are in the Logic or Rhetoric
stages, we will purpose to study and learn from the leading ideas during
this period of history. We will be studying events and individuals from
the premise that God sovereignly directs the acts of mankind and has a
purpose for what has happened before us.
Main Text-Streams of Civilization (junior high), Western Civilization
by Spielvogel (high school)
Advanced Latin-
Students with an introduction to Latin will continue their studies. (If
your child has not had Latin, you must pursue a course of study over the
summer to prepare for this class.) We will continue to expand vocabulary,
grammar understanding, and derivatives. This class will help students
apply concepts previously learned and enjoy reading, translating and writing
in a foreign language.
Post Latin Class Combination (for students who have
completed our high school Latin requirement of 2 full years of high school
Latin)-
Latin Conversation and Reading-meeting
once a month for Latin review, reading and discussion in Latin.
Introduction to Greek-an introductory
class covering the alphabet, root words and beginning vocabulary (focusing
on vocabulary especially related to English)
Economics-an introductory course
(I am currently evaluating possible texts)
American Government-We will study the foundations and
formation of our government, its connections to the Greek and Roman political
systems, and our current electoral process. This course will probably
meet twice each month, interspersed with the Logic class.
English–writing, grammar and literature
Writing-We will use the
Lost Tools of Writing curriculum (an incremental classical writing method,
teaching writing invention, arrangement and elocution.) Students will
work on strong paragraphs, essays of all types, critiques, and evaluations.
A heavy emphasis will be placed on developing clear strong presentation
of a thesis, both in written and oral communication.
Public Speaking-an intregal
part of this course is the development of public communication skills.
Students will have poems and verses to memorize and recite, oral research
presentations, debates and speeches.
Grammar-weekly review
of grammar concepts, parsing, and diagramming
Literature-Most of the
reading will be done at home and class time will include discussion of
the book’s characters, themes, plot, setting, and the literary devices
used. We hope that the literature read will be instrumental in developing
the student’s understanding of the good, the true and the beautiful.
The amount of weekly reading will be heavy, but it should be very interesting
as we trace the progression of history and literature together. We will
schedule our time to allow for discussion, careful consideration of the
ideas presented and thoughtful written and oral responses. The goal is
that each student will personally keep up on their reading, but at the
parent’s discretion some books can be completed via books-on-tape
or parent-child read aloud time.
